Honoring the legacy of 8-4-4 while leading the CBC transformation
Kenya's 8-4-4 education system, introduced in 1985, served the nation for over three decades. This system consisted of eight years of primary education, four years of secondary education culminating in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), and four years of university education.
The 8-4-4 system emphasized practical skills, vocational training, and self-reliance, producing graduates who made significant contributions to Kenya's development. The KCSE examination served as the primary gateway to higher education and professional opportunities.
While the 8-4-4 system has been phased out, we honor its legacy and the many successful graduates it produced, recognizing its role in building the foundation of modern Kenyan education.
Kenya began transitioning to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in 2017, marking a fundamental shift from examination-focused learning to competency-based education. The CBC follows a 2-6-3-3-3 structure: two years of pre-primary, six years of primary, three years of junior secondary, three years of senior secondary, and three years of university education.
Unlike the 8-4-4 system's emphasis on summative examinations like KCSE, CBC focuses on continuous assessment, practical competencies, critical thinking, communication skills, and digital literacy. This approach prepares students not just for examinations, but for life, work, and active citizenship in the 21st century.
As a CBC-aligned institution, we are proud to be part of this educational transformation, offering all three pathways (STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts & Sports Science) to ensure every student can pursue their unique talents and interests.
The transition from 8-4-4 to CBC represents Kenya's commitment to evolving educational practices that meet the demands of a changing world. While the 8-4-4 system served its purpose admirably, CBC represents the future of Kenyan education, emphasizing competencies over rote learning and preparing students for success in an increasingly dynamic global environment.
At St. Charles Lwanga Gesero Hybrid Senior School, we recognize the value of both systems. We honor the contributions of 8-4-4 graduates while fully embracing CBC as the pathway forward. Our educators are trained in CBC methodology, and our facilities are designed to support competency-based learning across all three pathways.
Applications are now open for the next academic year. Secure your place in one of Kenya's premier triple-pathway CBC schools.
