Our History
A journey of excellence in education, rooted in Catholic values and committed to nurturing engaged, empowered, and ethical citizens.
Our Foundation
St. Charles Lwanga Gesero Hybrid Senior School was established in the heart of Gesero, Kisii, under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Kisii. Named after St. Charles Lwanga, a patron saint of African youth, our school embodies the values of faith, integrity, and service to the community.
Kenya's Educational Evolution
Kenya's education system has undergone significant transformations over the decades. Following independence in 1963, the country adopted the 7-4-2-3 system, which was later replaced in 1985 by the 8-4-4 system under President Daniel arap Moi. The 8-4-4 structure consisted of eight years of primary education, four years of secondary education (culminating in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education - KCSE), and four years of university education. This system emphasized practical skills and vocational training to promote self-reliance and employment.
The 8-4-4 system served Kenya for over three decades, producing graduates who contributed significantly to the nation's development. However, recognizing the need for a more holistic, competency-based approach that better prepares students for the 21st century, Kenya began transitioning to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in 2017.
Embracing the Future: CBC Transition
From its inception, St. Charles Lwanga Gesero Hybrid Senior School was designed to be a pioneer in implementing Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The CBC represents a fundamental shift from the examination-focused 8-4-4 system to a competency-based approach that emphasizes continuous assessment, practical skills, critical thinking, and digital literacy. The CBC follows a 2-6-3-3-3 structure: two years of pre-primary, six years of primary, three years of junior secondary, three years of senior secondary, and three years of university education.
Our commitment to offering all three CBC pathways—STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts & Sports Science—makes us one of the few institutions in the region providing such comprehensive educational options. As Kenya continues its transition from the 8-4-4 system to CBC, we stand at the forefront of this educational transformation, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the future while honoring the legacy of educational excellence established under the previous system.
Over the years, we have grown from a small institution to a recognized center of educational excellence, maintaining our core mission of nurturing every learner's potential while adapting to the evolving needs of our students and the broader community. We honor the contributions of the 8-4-4 system while embracing CBC as the future of Kenyan education.
